Want to learn how to grow your own food?  Not sure where to start?  Looking for tips on how to grow fabulous fruits, veggies, and herbs in small spaces on a budget? Container gardening is great for folks who live in apartments, rental suites, or don't have a backyard garden to plant in. This session is sure to inspire you to get growing!

Topics will include: where to get cheap planters (and what size they should be), where to find the best soil for growing food in containers, what to plant and how to care for it, getting the most out of tiny and small spaces, growing food year round, and where to go for help. Participants should bring a willingness to get their hands dirty. Container Gardening Guide and your own plant to take home with you is included!

About the facilitator: Matthew Kemshaw has worked in the field of Urban Agriculture for several years and has been mentored by some of the Pacific Northwest's most respected community gardeners. His experience includes working with dozens of schools to strengthen or create their own schoolyard food garden, growing thousands of vegetable seedlings for giveaway in low income neighborhoods of Vancouver, working with Parks Victoria to develop Food Forests on city land, maintaining several community gardens in both Victoria and Vancouver, and designing and implementing horticultural therapy programs with the elderly and people suffering from addictions and/or mental health issues. Matthew has an incredible amount of passion and vision for urban agriculture in Western Canada.

Capacity: 20 participants (register early to reserve your space as this workshop will sell out fast!). Please note, if you sign up for the workshop, that means we are holding a space for you, so please do attend as we are expecting a waitlist!

This workshop is part of the Urban Agricultural Skills Training Workshop Series, generously supported by Vancity.

The Urban Agricultural Skills Training Program is a workshop series designed to equip SFU students and community members with the skills to produce, preserve, and prepare their own food. Participants will engage in discussions of our food systems both locally and globally and gain tools to create change in their own lives and communities.

The SFU Local Food Project is a campus based organization that aims to increase the amount of local food available on campus, create awareness of the benefits of local food, and encourage and support alternative food production and distribution systems on campus.
